comparison

May 28, 2014 by Sarah DeForest

As women (or men if you're a guy reading this) comparison seems to be inevitable. Whether we think we are better or worse than others, we compare ourselves. Why? Why do we continually let the beast in to our lives? Are we that dissatisfied or insecure? Why do we consistently look at God's masterpiece called [enter your name here] with disdain and desire to be someone else?

I believe this phenomenon occurs because we 1) do not understand the price that was paid for us 2) our true value and 3) we don't believe what Jesus says about us. It's a tragedy that we neglect the truth of what we are. I mean think about it, God designed you, crafted you, molded you, and said it was good. Yet, we look in the mirror or at our accomplishments and say it's bad.

I remember in college I would compare myself to every other girl and always be disheartened because I wasn't as artsy or pretty or smart or I wasn't as well known or accomplished. And instead of enjoying my experience and my relationships, I never felt good enough. I would put myself down constantly because I believed the lie that God made a mistake with me because I wasn't like her.

I want to tell you today that if you have ever felt this way it's a lie and it will destroy you. You are unique. You are original. You are the only person like you. You couldn't be made any more perfect. God never makes mistakes and how ridiculous are we to think that he has. Every good and perfect thing comes from the Lord (James 1:17): people usually refer that scripture to blessings but I'm referring it to you today. Everything God created about you is good. Your hair, skin, voice, talents, personality, gifts, your thoughts, smile, heart, love for others, and overall person was made on purpose by a God who knows what he is doing. Don't doubt your creator and question his choices. His thoughts and ways are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:9) and He sees the bigger pictures.

We are put on this earth to love others so I believe it's really important that we except who we are and who we were created to be. We can't love others fully if we don't fully love ourselves.

I encourage you to take a look in the mirror and love what you see. We all need work but in order to continue on with the good work he first created we must love it. You are worthy of being loved, even by yourself.

love,
Sarah Joy
